It’s true.
Sorry for the macabre headline. But what happens to your music when you die?
If you use CD Baby, your music will stay in stores (after an initial per-album upload fee), but CD Baby will siphon 9% of your earnings to themselves, forever.
If you use TuneCore, things are grim. TuneCore will ostensibly delete all your music from stores when they try to rebill your expired credit card (because you’re dead) for the annual per-album fee.
At DistroKid, we’d like your music to live on forever. And maybe even make your kin some money.
That’s why we recently launched our new “Leave a Legacy” feature.
Opt any album or single into Leave a Legacy, and we’ll make sure your music stays in stores forever, even after you die, even if your credit card expires, even if you can’t keep your DistroKid membership alive.
And we’ll continue to pass along 100% of earnings to you (or whoever gets your dough after you’ve kicked).
Pricing for Leave a Legacy is a one-time (non recurring) payment of:
- $29 for a single
- $49 for an album
I chose this pricing because it’s the exact same pricing our friends at CD Baby (it’s true, they are our actual friends) charge to upload a new single or album. But unlike CD Baby, who will take 9% of your earnings forever, DistroKid takes nothing. So it’s an easy choice.
To opt-into Leave a Legacy, find the option on DistroKid’s upload form (for new releases) or on your DistroKid album page (for your previous releases).
Fine print: If stores remove your music, or if there’s a DMCA copyright takedown, or if anything else out of our control happens, or if there’s some significant change to our relationship with stores (like they start charging us a buncha money to keep your album there… which we don’t expect), tough noogies. But otherwise, you’re good to go — and your music will be around longer than you are.
